When I found some beautiful, fragrant purple passion fruits at my local grocery store I just had to try them. I’ve never eaten passion fruit before and the smell was intoxicating, like perfumed fruit punch. I later learned that they smelled of Kool-Aid to me because passion fruit is often used in juice mixes to enhance their aroma.

I had no idea what these little gems were going to look like when I cut them open, and boy was I was surprised by what I found. The peels are full of orange gel-encased seeds. To eat passion fruit, you scoop the seeds out with a spoon (leaving the white rind behind) and swallow them whole. Apparently this is because the seeds are bitter when chewed. Although sweet-smelling, these were surprisingly tart. This wasn’t a bad thing though, as they tasted magical and marvelous!

    • Hi Dimple! :) Thank you so much for your sweet comments and for sharing your passion fruit story! I love reading about how you craved passion fruit juice when you were pregnant. Did your little one develop a love for it, as well? It is certainly delicious! I can’t believe that when I was young I’d had so much unhealthy “fruit punch” drinks in the form of Kool-Aid and other sugary drink mixes, but I’d never had the real thing! Now I know what that “fruit punch” flavor is supposed to be… passion fruit, yum!

  1. We LOVE these! My husband orders them every fall from some grower who can grow them here in the States somewhere. The longer they sit, the more shriveled they become–and the sweeter (kind of sweet-tart). Since we buy them in boxes, we sometimes have extra. We scoop out the pulp and freeze them. I’ve been pulling them out this winter and loving it!

    • Hi HSD! :) Wow, thank you for sharing your passion fruit story! I love how you order passion fruit every fall, that is wonderful. It is so tasty, I can’t believe it took me this many years to find and try one. I’m glad that I researched how to eat them first before trying them out, too. If I hadn’t, I probably would have tried chewing or pureeing the fruit with the seeds, yikes! How do you use the frozen pulp? Do you put it through a special juicer or sieve or do you just thaw it and eat it as-is?

      • When it thaws, it is runnier than when it is in the “pod.” We just pour it into a bowl and eat it with a spoon like we do the fresh– but it’s kind of “soupy.” It would be wonderful forced through a sieve and made into juice. But we like it so much just as is, I never want to waste a bit! I’ve had a delectable passion fruit mojito finished with champagne on Grand Cayman that I think I’d love to try to make. But I never get that far!
